White Cloud Workshop

Still got a fair bit of work to do on this one but might not get the time for a while. Started this when attending an illustrative master class run by White Clouds. Highly recommend the course.

Department Symbols

My final designs for a project where I had to come up with a set of symbols for Drawing, Photography and Colour Theory Departments. For this project we could not use colour or text in our symbols. I regret not playing with some of the stroke sizes, the compass legs in particular on the black and white sample look a little weak.

Squeezing in the painting

So this year I started at Waikato University taking a course in Computer Graphic Design. So far it has been massively time consuming and mainly focused on the principles of design. Loving the after hour access and other services provided by the Uni. At some points you find the papers don't go as in depth into the subject as you would like but at least the resources are there for you to do your own research into what it is that you wish to learn.
So far I have been getting my kicks and giggles out of the History paper. It has always taken me a while to fully appreciate some of the odd trends in art and design that have swept over regions of the world. Getting the chance to look into the background of these trends and the times they were popular really opens your eyes to the why.
Just recently we were given an assignment to write an essay on a design from the long 19th century. My pick was the Moët & Chandon White Star poster by Alphonse Mucha: Link
The assignment also required us to design a cover page in the style of the chosen design/designer. Having been to busy to be able to really touch my Wacom over the last half semester I decided to go nuts on this one, illustrating a sensual picture of me innocently walking though a mystical forest wearing skimpy shorts and looking much like a virgin ripe for the plucking. I'm sure my tutor will appreciate it and maybe overlook some of my sloppy essay writing.

In Limbo

Here's a illustration my mate Matt Haworth and I collaborated on. It is based on a scene from a story concept I started working on at the start of the year. Pencil by me, digital painting Matt Haworth.

Hello World

After two years of laying concrete pipes four meters under the ground I knew I wasn't going to be a drainlayer for the rest of my life and so I enrolled into the Freelance School of Animation. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't a sudden unthought about move, I have been passionate about drawing and illustration for some time now, before and while working. Anyway it has been half a year now and I have a reasonably solid idea of how hard it can be to break into the illustration and animation industries, with many schools across the country and world pumping out illustration students and such a limited amount of incoming work. You have to be the best and to be the best you have to get good fast.
Well this here is my blog dedicated to showcasing my portfolio and progress. I hope the artwork I produce will be entertaining enough to keep you guys coming back after reading my boring rants about development, practice, motivation and bla bla bla...
To start things of heres two illustrations and a storyboard I sketched up for a school project. They follow a cyborg in a dodgy situation with bombs and guns and thing. Real meat head stuff.
